about

The purpose of this album is a family get together.
Nic Olas flew to Wellington from Waitati (north Otago) bringing a box of wondrous instruments (flutes, recorders, crumhorns, duduk, pipa…). At a house in Kilbirnie (thanks Susan and for the tasty cake you made!) he and Chris Topher, on a fiddle made by Upper Hutt resident Malcolm C, spent three days recording music together. They played through collections of freshly minted tunes. ‘Tunes for Dad’ were written in the last months of Peter Prosser’s life and dedicated to him. ‘To the End of Loch Doone’ (that’s ‘lockdown’ with a Scots accent!) are pieces to while away the Covid restrictions.

Selection by Chris to represent these 3 days:
DAY ONE ‘Tunes for Dad’
1. Taptoe 1.27
2. Good as Gold 0.59
3. Occasional 3 1.44

8. J Zmeekl 0.31
9. Lament and Dance 1.17
10. As the World Burns 1.05

DAY TWO ‘To the End of Loch Doone’ tracks 12-23 (most of these tunes don’t have individual names)
DAY THREE ‘To the End of Loch Doone’ continued tracks 24-39

Originally Chris was going to title this release ‘Family Tunes’ – a dull if accurate name. Nick said how he couldn’t get the tunes out of his head in the way that ‘earworms’ work. Hence the new name.

Home recording on Sony MV-1. Recorded at 21 Yule Street Kilbirnie on November 17th-19th 2020.
CDR limited edition of 20. Rongotai Records RR-CDR-1
